Opening Keynote: All Hail The Fail: Don’t Just Tolerate Failure - Design for It

What do you do when it IS rocket science? Getting to space is as hard as it gets. Failure is a daily occurrence. Why? We design for it. We look for it and ensure it happens in an environment that is safe and provides us rich data. I’ve learned that when this mentality is applied to L&D programming…well, magic happens. This session will cover how you can actually design failure into your creation process to ultimately deliver a better product. We’ll discuss:

  • The difference between a “Capital F” failure and a micro-failure and which is most helpful. During a failure, L&D can become superheroes – it’s all in the mindset.
  • What you won’t get from this session are a bunch of platitudes on how great failure is. I think we have all heard enough of that.
  • Instead, we will cover how to design for it and be ready when it does happen. That’s a conversation worth having!

Keynote Presentation: From Content to Context - Leverage LXP to Integrate Learning into the Flow of Work and Empower Workers in Real Time

Broad-minded CLOs understand that helping people navigate the information overload of our times is one of the tasks at hand, when their intention is to increase learning effectiveness. To that end, technologies that enable content curation must evolve and be integrated into the workers’ context. That’s where Learning Experience Platforms (LXP) comes in. While LMS manages exposure to content and completion, LXP aims to deliver much more targeted and ever more relevant bits of information – and therefore, less information - to help employees accomplish what they need to do, and at the exact time they might need it, even if they don’t know they need it yet.

This session will explore some of the leading-edge usages of learning integration into the flow of work via LXP and promising results for business performance. Topics include:

· Personalization: think roles and performance, not simply skills - how to help people get things done faster ·

Real time: successful examples of integrating existing systems into LXPs that intelligently recommend content in real time

· Embedded engineering & analytics: complex algorithms to deliver and measure ever-more relevant information

Morning Panel - Creating Fertile Ground: Transforming Leadership Mind-Sets and Organizational Dynamics to Effect Lasting Change

All too often, the seeds of new ideas and behaviors planted by training initiatives do not flourish into real sustainable change, even when tied to individual goals and business outcomes. What occurs is that organizational dynamics and leadership have a direct – and often not accounted for - impact whether or not what is learned during training will be put forth into practice. Freshly learned skills, behaviors, and innovative ideas often clash with legacy mind-sets and old management styles, therefore change does not last. This discussion will address the role of forward-thinking L&D in leading effective culture change: · Creating a fertile ground for lasting change and innovation to happen

· How to support the transformation of legacy mind-sets and leadership styles?

· Promoting cross-functional change management

· Enabling a psychologically safe environment, where open communication is key

Keynote Presentation - Think Like a Data Scientist: Measuring the Real Impact of Learning, Beyond ROI: Business Performance

L&D has been using data for decades, measuring attendance, completion, and learner satisfaction – and often tying these indicators to business outcomes, delivering measurable ROI. Even with all of technological advancements, the real impact of learning on performance is a critical measurement L&D leaders can’t address. The question still remains: how to measure the effectiveness of learning? The answers lie in the advanced use of People Analytics. This keynote will explore:

· The opportunity for L&D to start thinking like data scientists and promote breakthroughs in business performance

· Shifting from typical HR data (retention, engagement, learning) to target broader business problems (productivity, workforce effectiveness, operational patterns, etc)

· Hypothesizing, experimenting, measuring, and adapting

Transformational Mentorship - How to Start a Movement in Your Organization

All research points to the fact that if you’re not currently leveraging the superpower of mentorship in your organization, you are sitting on an untapped goldmine. The seeds of mentorship can transform the most life-depleting, self-serving culture towards a life nurturing culture of stewardship and servitude. When you start to align your culture with the spirit of mentorship, amazing things begin to happen. “Playing it forward” becomes a grassroots movement that permeates your organization from the bottom up - and even the most skeptical executive cannot help but be compelled by its momentum.
Learning Takeaways:

  • Learn the competencies of transformational mentorship and be able to apply them into your everyday life.
  • A clear understanding of what the role of a mentor is and the difference between formal and informal mentorship.
  • A roadmap to launch a mentorship program in your organization.
  • An understanding of the potential pitfalls and obstacles to a world-class mentoring program.
  • A concrete mentorship strategy for large and global organizations.
  • Leave with tools, checklists, templates and a tangible experience of how powerful mentorship can be

Keynote Workshop - The Speed of Trust: Building Collaborative Healthy Work Environments - Starting with Your Leadership

Increasingly, leaders and organizations today are rallying around an intentional focus on building their culture. The data proves that a culture of high trust plays a preeminent, "different in kind" role on the stage of organizational performance. A high-trust culture is the life spring from which all high performing, winning cultures flow. High Trust is an energizer.

This two-part session will, first, highlight how the US Federal Prison Industries’ (BOP, USDOJ) learning leader drove dramatic culture transformation at the speed of business by infusing a trust quotient into management practice. Fire-Side Chat - Gaining C-Suite Support for L&D’s Transformation

Bridging the skills-gap, talent development, and learning have recently become top of mind for the executive team as many companies simply cannot find the talent they need to continue growing. Still, many executive leaders see the learning organization as a service-provider and not a business partner, and it’s up to L&D leaders themselves to turn this around. CLOs have the opportunity of shaping the conversation in order to address real business issues and expected outcomes. L&D leaders will be reinventing their status when they extend expectations of their initiatives to affect business performance, productivity and results – versus simply designing and delivering programs for engagement. While L&D should be leading business transformation, it has to be done in conjunction with other business areas and key internal stakeholders; it is not an L&D job alone. This engaging fire-side chat will provide insights directly from other members of the c-suite into:

· Important KPIs to take into account when discussing learning strategy with executive leadership

· Re-framing the L&D function and conversation in terms of outcomes, rather than activities or programs

· Understanding internal expectations and sharing accountability
